H1N1 (Swine Flu): South America Explodes with H1N1

The Southern Hemisphere is heating up – H1N1 is in all South American countries and is causing widespread illness.  The numbers are increasingly daily and more deaths are being reported, affecting younger people.  In addition to the WHO website, check the Pan America Health Organization for regular updates– http://new.paho.org/hq/.

While big pharmaceutical firms are ramping up efforts to mass-produce a vaccine for H1N1, they are still months away from having enough stocks – too late for the Southern Hemisphere’s winter flu season. Baxter and Novartis are in the early stages of vaccine production with human trials the next step.
