H1N1 (Swine Flu): Purell Lays Off 150 Workers – Sign of the Times

July 17, 2010

The makers of the now famous Purell, hygiene company Gojo Industries, plans to cut 150 jobs at its Ohio plant, symptomatic of the H1N1 slow down.  Last year, as anxiety over the H1N1 virus spread, hand sanitizer orders went through the roof.   As the fears died down and the illness became widespread but not terribly lethal, the public need and response for the product dropped as well.  Gojo responded initially by returning workers to eight-hour days, down from 12 hours during the H1N1 outbreak.  Levels are not however expected to get below the “pre-H1N1 pandemic” as the long-term, the popularity of hand sanitizers and other hygiene products have been growing over the past few years.

Hopefully businesses will continue having hand sanitizer available on a regular basis. It has made a difference on many levels, and proper hand cleaning is a great habit to promote!

I agree! i am hopeful that some of the improved health care habits will carry past this pandemic…better handwashing, cough hygiene, staying home when sick and use of hand sanitizers are all good things! Be well, Regina
