The first Great Southern California ShakeOut was held November 2008 and was reported to be the largest earthquake drill in U.S. history involving 5.3 million participants. This drill took place in homes, businesses, schools, places of worship and communities across California. In 2009 it expanded to include the entire state of California and has grown every year.
It has also moved onto other seismic areas of the United States. There is now a Great Utah Shakeout and a Great Central U.S Shakeout as well! Last year more than 12.5 million people were registered in ShakeOut drills worldwide.
The Great California ShakeOut is an annual opportunity to practice how to be safer during big earthquakes: “Drop, Cover and Hold On.” The ShakeOut has also been organized to encourage you, your community, your school, or your organization to review and update emergency preparedness plans and supplies, and to secure your space in order to prevent damage and injuries.
Come join millions of people who will Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:18 a.m. on October 18th* in the 2012 Great California ShakeOut! For more information, read the answers to frequently asked questions.
