FEMA just released new federal flood maps that reveal that more areas, farther inland are expected to flood. Tidal surges will be more ferocious. And 35,000 more homes and businesses will be located in flood zones, which will almost certainly nudge up insurance rates and determine how some structures are rebuilt.

The maps, created by FEMA were already in the process of being updated when the hurricane struck.  The agency hurried to release the new maps, which include the worst-hit parts of Staten Island, Queens and Brooklyn. They double the number of structures now in flood zones.

The remainder of the maps for the New York City area are expected to be released next month.
